The project resonates the rich narrative of “Kerem Hateimanim” (Yemenite’s Orchard) neighborhood in central Tel Aviv, complementing its vibrant and colorful fabric.
The site rests on the seam between the hustle and bustle of the Carmel Market, its pungent smells and laborious roughness, and the organic vernacular of quiet alleyways, that carry a sense of community and intimacy, of comforting aromas and unmediated neighborly ties.
The materiality of the project blends a harsh exposed concrete and black steel referencing the ruggedness of the market, with a warm wooden surface that mediates an aroma of tenderness and intimacy of neighborhood living.
A wooden frame surrounds the residential balconies, bathing in the sun. The intimacy of the apartment is accessed from the street through protruding windows that allow a seat perching on the street, and prominent balconies that look out to the neighboring houses.
A tall commercial facade faces the street, inviting passers-by with a its elegantly sharp and rhythmic wooden canopy.
The shadow of the sun
falls on bare concrete bumps,
a black iron spike
slices the entire sky,
a crooked flatness curls upwards
The sharpness of the material creates a yourthful dynamic that stands in contrast to the softness and intimacy of the wood that wraps the interior of the building.
